West Bengal Civil Services is a state administrative examination commonly known as
the WBCS Exam. The examination is conducted in three stages – Preliminary, Mains,
and Interview. WBCS is one of the most toughest exams in West Bengal and many
aspirants from the state start their preparation for the exam in their high schools just to
get an upper hand over the competition. WBCS preparation requires correct and
authentic study pattern. Difficulty level of WBCS is very high compared to other
competitive exams. There are many subjects to study so one must have the guidance of

follow competitive study materials to learn the basics and practice questions later. This
exam is conducted to recruit individuals who are dedicated to the nation and take great

After clearing the Preliminary stage, the next step for a candidate is the Main examination. The mains exam consists of total nine papers; four General Studies papers, two papers of Optional subject (Paper VI and Paper VII), one paper on Essay and two qualifying papers of mother language and English paper.

01. Marks

Optional subject consists of a total of 500 marks out of a total of 2025 marks and hence play an important role to get selection in the Civil services examination.

02. Medium

Optional papers can be answered in English or any of the languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India. The optional papers can be answered in English even if none of the other papers have been answered by the candidate in English language.

03. Syllabus

For the optional subject, the UPSC has given the detailed syllabus in its notification. In the case of Engineering, Medical Science and law, the level corresponds to the bachelors’ degree”.
